Diwali 2018

Diwali is the five-day festival of lights that is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs, and Jains across the world. The festival, which coincides with the Hindu New Year, celebrates new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil and light over darkness. Diwali is one of the most significant festivals in Indian culture. Millions of people celebrate by attending firework displays, prayers, and celebratory events across the world every autumn. The actual day of Diwali is traditionally celebrated on the third day of the festival, which this year will be Wednesday, November 7. The celebration usually falls between the middle of October and the middle of November. This year, the festival will be celebrated November 5th-9th.   What is eaten during Diwali? MaxxContent and Vanderbilt's Business School Collaboration

We are proud of our MaxxContent team for partnering with Vanderbilt University’s Accelerator Project. This program provides college students and recent graduate students with real world application practices combined with their classroom learning experience during this four-week certificate program. MaxxContent, known for their E-Books and Learning Management Software, is aiming to enter the college textbook market. So, the task for the Accelerator teams was to strategize a plan to make the textbook buying process easier and less time-consuming for college students. The teams presented many digital-based solutions ranging from digital book loans to gamification to virtual classroom applications. Also, the teams provided many ideas for marketing strategies ranging from Instagram and Facebook campaigns to having student brand ambassadors at freshman orientation. Overall, this was a great...

Thank You!

We appreciate everyone who came out to celebrate our 10th anniversary party earlier this month! As you may already know, we are moving our office to the North Capitol area, which is close to First Tennessee Park. We feel very fortunate that DevDigital has grown and thrived so much in the past ten years that we now need 7,500 square feet of space as opposed to our previous space of 4,000 square feet in the Berger Building. Currently, during the renovation process of our new office space, we are busily at work in E|SPACES in Belle Meade. We are looking forward to moving into our new offices at the Tennessee Education Association building on 801 2nd Avenue N. in September. To read more about our move, click here for more details about our transition featured in Nashville Post.

What The Market Data is Telling Us

What The Market Data is Telling Us

I like analyzing data. I spend lots of time managing our financials as well as all of our operating data. I also study the market data. The reason I watch all this data is because it helps me make informed decisions about the future of our business.  Over the last couple of years the more informed I’ve become the more I’ve realized I need to be informed about things outside of my normal scope. I am sure every business owner can get caught up in watching the data relative to their world while missing the big picture of changes happening all around them. Sometimes, and more often a lot of times, it is the bigger picture of sudden changes that have the greatest impact on your business. And sudden changes are just cumulative effects of small changes that have been happening over time.  So I’d like to share just a few macro changes that are beginning to affect our business and I am sure...

Reducing Software Defect

Reducing Software Defect

Software defect reduction is essential for eliminating future time-consuming work on fixing the defect as opposed to creating new development or new product. The upfront cost of eliminating the chance of defects is significant, but the cost of fixing defects is enormous. Therefore, software developers now have the capabilities of avoiding predictable pitfalls to help reduce errors in code.   It is 100 times more expensive discovering and fixing a software problem after delivery instead of finding and repairing during the requirements and design phase. Good design architectural practices can also decrease the cost-escalation factor.  Another way to reduce software defect is to reduce avoidable rework by abandoning the traditional reductionist processes and instead embrace the emergent processes. These types of processes emerge through prototyping. Additionally, peer reviews are a...

Is Digital an Expense or an Investment?

Interacting with customers, going to market, and carrying out operations is being transformed by digitization. Although the transformation is complex and time consuming, it is critical in giving businesses the potential to reinvent work and change the way they function fundamentally. There is great value in digital investment. A recent Forrester study reveals that a large percentage of executives believe that half of their revenue will be influence by digital by 2020. So, if you are moving slowly and cautiously in your  approach to digitization, you better believe that your competitors are not!   It is vital for a company to take an enterprise-wide view during the planning process to fully align their investments in their overall digital strategy. To insure that your company is getting a positive return on digital investment, digital ROI is implemented. The digital ROI framework is a...

Beware Of A New Security Risk

In the past few days, there has been serious coverage of a cyber attack by a piece of *Ransomware, called WannaCryptor but also going by Wanna Cry and Wcrypt, that is exploiting a problem with some Microsoft Windows operating systems that have not updated their operating systems. It has shut down Hospitals, Auto Factories and impacted many personal and business machines. While a security update from Microsoft is something that takes time and none of us enjoys, we urge everyone to update their Windows Operating System, regardless of versions. Not much is certain on this attack, except that it is being called "the world's biggest cyber attack", and is spreading. Here is a link to Microsoft's blog. If we can be of assistance, please let us know. --Peter MarcumManaging Director of DevDigital, LLC

The Wrong Way To Think About Technology

The Wrong Way To Think About Technology

We’ve been building “digital things” for businesses for over nine years and those engagements have given us tremendous insight into how people view their digital journey. How an individual or an entire organization views the use of technology is the determining factor of value either gained or lost. Another way to put it is you never want to spend time and money building something for use without having the end game in mind. Four key themes have emerged from listening to over 900 businesses that have come to us asking for digital enhancements of one kind or another. These four themes represent consistent challenges in how people and business leaders need to think about the very purpose of spending time and money developing digital technologies: 1) Many businesses spending time and money on creating new technology without understanding how the customers and employees, users, will gain...

Building a PokémonGo App for Your Business

By now you’ve certainly heard of Pokémon Go, and you’ve seen the crowds of people walking around, noses in their phones, excitedly chasing Pikachus and Charmanders across Nashville. Did you know that businesses are profiting from it? Sure, the Pokémon Company itself — a subsidiary of Nintendo — is making money from this game, but that same technology can be used to build similar apps for businesses. To understand how you need to understand a fundamental part of the PokémonGo gameplay. The game centers around a real world map with various locations marked as PokéStops. These locations can be local landmarks, art installations, churches, murals and certain businesses. Think of these stops as steps in a game to receive an incentive or to win a reward or engage with others who have a common interest. When you play the game, you can see PokéStops on the map from some distance away. However,...

Is There A Better Model For Pricing Technology?

I do a lot of reading and thinking on the weekends. This weekend I was thinking about the swings that our business has in capacity yields. Capacity yields represent the available billable resources against the number of billing projects currently being worked on. In the technology world, it is considered outstanding if you are running billable resources at 80% or better. It is pretty much the same in the consulting world. Then I began to think about how it could be run at 80% or better-- 80% of the time. If we could operate at this rate, we’d optimize profitability, resource utilization, and cash flow, among other benefits. I began to wonder—is this a pipe dream or is it possible?  If you called five different developers in Nashville and asked them to give you a price on building technology with unique specification, the pricing you’d get would be all over the place. The scope of the...
