The New Normal Workforce

If you haven’t noticed, the workforce trends are shifting dramatically and rapidly. Every employer needs to shift with these trends or suffer the results of being out of touch and out of talent. Finding and keeping good talent is a War and it is real; and will continue to worsen as 10,000 baby boomers leave the job market each day and the demand for highly skilled workers in a new knowledge economy outpaces supply, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math). These fields just about cover every market demand for talent in the United States and abroad. The temp workforce population (Freelancers, Gig Workers, and Contingent labor) is growing at an unprecedented pace; it’s expected to be 50% of our total workforce population by 2020, which is just four years away. The majority of these workers have chosen this path willingly. There are a lot of issues driving these...

What Are They Learning From You?

Let’s take a typical consumer’s journey onto a website that they found through searching for topics of interest. Let’s assume the site they found was either the result of a referral by someone, or findings from the search, which were the result of high rankings or paid search ads. The consumer “learned” about the site from three sources. So, the first part of the journey was “finding something of relevance” through web searches which happens more than 3.5 billion times a day. Point #1: If they can’t find you they don’t have the opportunity to learn anything from you. Once the consumer journey begins at your website, visitors have to be able to quickly find what they are looking for. One has to assume that what they were looking for has something to do with what they were searching for. So, if the key words used to tag the site brought people to the site. Now, the obvious thing they...

What Data Tells The Productivity Story?

I was recently reading an article that talked about how technology has made businesses more productive. Of course I agreed. Then I read on, and the article addressed other issues that drive business productivity more than just technology. While few would disagree that technology has certainly enhanced productivity in many manufacturing sectors, there is still and always will be the human element that affects productivity in all business sectors. As I read on, I found the findings of recent research from Bain & Company, conducted in conjunction with the Economist Intelligence Unit, revealing and I wanted to share some of the findings with our readers. Fundamentally employee satisfaction, scaled at different levels of “satisfaction”, drives productivity. Productivity drives customer satisfaction which drives revenue as well as profitability. So the story revealed by your productivity...

What Gifts Do Customers (People) Really Appreciate?

As we enter this holiday season, it makes sense to pause for a moment and think about what gifts do our customers want? And more importantly, what’s the point of giving them anything? On a basic level, we give gifts because we’re supposed to. On certain occasions — birthdays, anniversaries, dinner parties, the end of the year — it’s customary. Underlying that custom is an important purpose: appreciation. We give people gifts to show them that we are grateful for them, and value the role they play in our lives and our business. But here’s a common misconception: the bigger, more valuable the gift, the more it expresses our appreciation. I know people who’ve received huge stock grants who feel severely under-appreciated. This is because gifts don’t express appreciation, people do. And when people don’t express it, neither do their gifts. The gifts I have received that have meant so much...

It Takes More Than Words

I was walking down Broadway the other day and ran into an old friend from my touring days. We talked for a while and upon departure he gave me a hug and said “Happy Holidays Mitch, it is really good to see you”. I left that encounter feeling good seeing my old friend and also feeling a sense that the holidays were upon us.  Then I ran into someone I didn’t recognize and they seemed to pretend to know me and said “Happy Holidays, good to see you”. I walked away not feeling the same.  In reflecting, I realized that the season of appreciation, thanksgiving and joy is upon us, and many of us will express such things in words, but to truly experience the meaning of the season it takes a lot more than that. I love this time of year and in many ways I hate it. The commercialization of appreciating those that matter and the meaning of our relationships have become seasonal moments rather than...

Do You Operate a Digital Business?

The Digital Era is an age where technology has become the foundation of any successful business – it is a prime driver of market differentiation, business growth, innovation, adaptability, collaboration and profitability. In short, every business is now a digital business, and those where the full C-Suite understand the benefits of this are those that will be most successful. Digital isn’t what you might think it is. Sure, it involves digital products, data, customer-engagement, software as a service, e-commerce and the proliferation of those digital tools. But more importantly, digital is more about a mindset.  The Digital mindset is about creating the most value from the digital assets. The value is not in the actual asset. The value is in what you get from enabling the asset to be used. Correctly enabling the asset for use is where and how you get the highest return. Executive...

How Often Should You Redesign Your Website?

Many times people ask us “How often should we change our web site?” The answer depends on your customers and business goals, but we do have some general guidelines for you to consider. First, despite your best intentions, it is very challenging to design a site that doesn’t look stale in some way if it is never changed. Second, and perhaps more important, Google simply ranks sites higher when they make changes. Additionally, Google’s search algorithms are always changing, which means that in order to keep up, SEO plans need to be adjusted, content needs to be refreshed, and following the newest trend: having original and personalized images that are tagged accordingly. Here's the thing, trends change all the time and technology changes constantly. For example, a responsive mobile experience is one of the latest, and most important trends today. Most websites we see are still not...

Is Your Site a Billboard in the Desert?

Some websites don’t attract anyone. Then there are other sites that get tons of attention. The difference between these two types of sites boils down to two things. One has to do with findability and two has to do with usability. Findability is a term for the ease with which information contained within a website can be found, both from outside the website (using search engines and the like) and by users already on the website. The web is full of content being added by the billions daily.  Some of the content contains new information, unique perspectives, knowledge and relevancy to others (context). Much of the content adds little value to others if people can’t find it—on or off your site, so it remains static and garners little (if any) attention. If the content is not being seen, then the value it provides to the supplier, buyer, or even the entire marketplace, is basically...

Communications Starts Inside, Then Permeates Out

If we expect our team members to effectively communicate with a client, our community and prospects, then our organization has to lead by example.  We have all the tools necessary to communicate better than ever before, but do we understand the value and the meaning of communications? Think about it. Internal Communications (IC) radically improves, controls and measures the way we communicate with employees and stakeholders, helping to drive positive employee behavior and increase engagement with influencers. Trends A snapshot of the IC industry highlights that the average ratio of internal communicators to employees within an organization, is 1 per 500 to 1000. 3 in every 4 internal communicators say their IC strategy is aligned with their business strategy. A quarter of all IC departments said that they would increase their budgets in 2014, with the biggest issue being leadership...

What is the Content Your Audience Actually Buys?

I found this slide presentation which was produced by Jon Lombardo, Content Marketing Lead at LinkedIn and previously the leader of GE’s Social Media Online presence.  The title of presentation caught my attention “Thought Leadership: The Content Marketing Your Audience Actually Buys. The reason it caught my attention is because I think most of the content online is a bunch of junk and most of us populate our web sites with content that really only matters to us, the sellers. Most of today’s content on the web has become bland content that only matters to the sellers  but it does not carry any meaning to those that matter the most, the buyers.  The author of this presentation calls distinguish seller content as “blue pills” and seller content as “red pills”.   Sellers can pump out “blue pills” all day long because that is what they talk about all day long.  The sellers marketing...
